Got an idea you want to bring to life for TogetherTuesday? Here’s how to make it happen.

Whether you’re part of a nonprofit, a community group, a workplace, or simply someone who wants to join in, this is an opportunity to turn your idea into something shared. You don’t need a complex plan to begin. What matters most is choosing something specific and taking the first step.

Start With a Real Need

The strongest activations begin with something specific. Not a broad concept, but a tangible need or opportunity within your community. What are people already experiencing? What’s one small way you could respond to that together?

This can take many forms. A volunteer effort, a shared meal, a donation drive, or a skill-sharing event are all great starting points. The goal isn’t to design something perfect, but to identify something concrete and doable.

A Simple Timeline to Guide Your Planning

If you have a few weeks to get ready, it helps to think in stages rather than trying to do everything at once. Here’s how to move from an idea to activation.

6–8 Weeks Out: Define Your Focus

Start by getting clear on what you’re doing and why. Identify the need you’re responding to and the action you want to take. Set a simple goal, invite a few collaborators, and decide on a basic format. At this stage, clarity matters more than scale.

4–6 Weeks Out: Build Your Foundation

With your idea in place, begin organizing what you already have. Take stock of available resources, confirm who is involved, and outline a simple plan. Assigning a few clear roles, even informally, can help keep things moving.

2–4 Weeks Out: Invite People to Join You

This is where your activation starts to take shape publicly. Share what you’re planning through the channels you already use, keeping the message clear so people can quickly understand what is happening and how to join.

If you’re creating materials, this is a good moment to use simple, ready-made assets. Our Canva templates can help you quickly put together social posts, flyers, or other digital content without needing to design from scratch. We’ll be adding more TogetherTuesday templates soon, and you can also download the logos to get started. Momentum tends to build as more people begin to see and share what you’re doing.

Day Of and After: Show What’s Possible

On TogetherTuesday, the focus is on participation and visibility. Capture what is happening as it unfolds. Share photos, stories, and moments that reflect the experience, and highlight the people involved.

When it’s done, take a few minutes to reflect on what worked, what you learned, and what might continue. Even simple reflection can help shape what comes next.

Design for Participation and Build From What Exists

As you plan your activation, focus on making it easy for people to take part. The most effective efforts are often the most accessible. A clear activity, a defined window of time, and a straightforward way to participate can make a real difference. When people understand what to do and how to join, they are more likely to say yes.

You don’t need to start from scratch. Most communities already have what they need. Existing relationships, informal spaces, and communication channels can carry much of the work.

TogetherTuesday can be a starting point, a way to test an idea, or something you return to year after year. As a mid-year moment between GivingTuesdays, it helps carry the spirit of generosity forward and keep communities engaged throughout the year. Many efforts begin simply and grow over time. What matters is creating a moment for people to show up and take part!
