About the Position

GivingTuesday is seeking a Data Scientist to support analyses of the global giving data it collects and manages and help accomplish research objectives. As part of our global data science team reporting to the Senior Data Scientist, the Data Scientist will rely on their ability to access, query, manipulate, process and analyze data in order to support work on a diverse set of problems and projects related to learning, insights, and impact measurement in the nonprofit sector.

The right candidate will be fascinated by the challenge of assisting in meta-analysis of research, analyzing aggregated datasets to identify key indicators, conducting global social and media listening to measure the conversation, processing and annotating survey research data for visualization, developing values and behavior dashboards and contribute towards data science initiatives to recommend actionable insights and solutions to stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Processing, cleaning, validating, and analyzing a wide range of traditional, structured data from organization partners and collaborators in the nonprofit ecosystem in order to generate actionable insights for the sector.
  • Organizing, examining, and managing key datasets, including creating database dictionaries and user documentation.
  • Supporting the development of methodologies for achieving desired research outcomes and results based on existing data.
  • Coding and updating data pipelines to automate recurrent operations on core datasets for research projects
  • Creating impactful data visualizations and interactive data dashboards
  • Delivering briefings and rapid-response/ad-hoc data analysis to support the Chief Data Officer presentations and media appearances.

Requirements:

  • Degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or other quantitative fields. Coursework/Intensive training in data science and statistics with demonstrable skill set also accepted.
  • Familiarity with statistical techniques including hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and sampling techniques.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g. Python), and data querying languages (SQL required).
  • Skilled in exploratory analysis and mapping data flows, integration of datasets and reviewing data sources, tools, and methodologies.
  • Solid data visualization skills (e.g. Looker) and an aptitude for translating technical outputs into compelling stories.
  • Solid relationship management skills, with the ability to collaborate with a variety of internal stakeholders on complex research initiatives.
  • Experience with software development tools and practices (e.g. version control).
  • Understanding of legislation around privacy and best practices for securing data.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills in English and an ability to communicate clearly and directly.
  • Interest in the nonprofit and philanthropic sector and use of data to promote better social outcomes.
  • Experience working with Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes is an asset

Program Manager, India Hub

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. It is also the name of the nucleus organization that supports the global movement of 80+ countries, hundreds of community, cause, and identity-based movements and coalitions, and many millions of people all over the world committed to inspiring and manifesting generosity in the world. As we approach our tenth anniversary, we have a track record of remarkable impact behind us and exponential growth ahead. Our team has grown five-fold in the past two years.

 

We are seeking a Program Manager, India Hub, to join our global, distributed team. This person will play a critical role in managing projects, programs and high-impact partnerships for GivingTuesday in India. The GivingTuesday India Hub is expecting to ramp up operations for GivingTuesday in India, broadening and deepening the movement, and seeking ways to become the collaboration platform that convenes, learns from and adds value to all generosity movements and actors in India. The India Hub is exploring programming that includes a local fellowship program for grassroots social impact leaders (like the Starling Collective), an Indian chapter of GivingTuesday SPARK, Indian data projects that are in line with the objectives of the GivingTuesday Data Commons, and other similar initiatives. 

 

This role will report to the Director of Programs and Partnerships, GivingTuesday India Hub and work closely with the Director of the GivingTuesday India Hub. They will collaborate with the global GivingTuesday team and India leader/s. They will act as project manager on initiatives and events and ensure programs operate effectively. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide project planning and management support for various GivingTuesday India initiatives to assure high-quality implementation and sustainability
  • Ensure record-keeping and follow up of communications with key stakeholders across projects
  • Research potential sources of revenue (corporate, foundation, and individual) and support fundraising efforts to support events and programs 
  • Research, investigate and present opportunities for new programs and partnerships
  • Collaborate and facilitate seamless communication with GivingTuesday global team and a diverse group of external stakeholders
  • Support and engage with external stakeholders who want to participate in GivingTuesday
  • Manage logistics and budget for major events and summits (both online and offline) including hotel accommodations, transportation, catering, merchandise, technology, security, customer care and other needs. Create systems to streamline project elements
  • Assist with the programming for major events, including event flow, workshop structure, and overall ideation of summits and events
  • Assist with design and creative projects, such as graphic creation and decks
  • Manage external suppliers and service providers 
  • Provide administrative support for GivingTuesday India team members  as needed
  • May be assigned other tasks and duties reasonably related to their job responsibilities

 

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 6 years experience of project management
  • Demonstrated understanding of the social impact and philanthropic sector in India, as well as the broader generosity culture (religious and cultural traditions and behaviors) and how they differ across the country. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated relationship building, from initiating conversations with potential partners to engagement and cultivation. 
  • Strong organizational and project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, largely virtual workspace (prior

experience of working with a global team a big plus)

Location and Time Zones

  • This role is virtual (no office) and works closely with the India Hub Director and India Director Programs and Partnerships. 
  • Regular travel will be required to meet with key stakeholders across the country.
  • Collaboration with a global team working across multiple time zones will require some flexibility in working hours.

Academic Research Partnerships Manager

Salary range: $65,000 to $80,000 USD annual

About the Position:

In consultation with a wide range of nonprofit and philanthropic sector stakeholders, GivingTuesday leads the development of an extensive research agenda that seeks to meet the most pressing knowledge needs in the sector. Given the broad range of exciting areas to explore and opportunities for collaboration to leverage, GivingTuesday is looking for an Academic Research Partnerships Manager to maintain the focus and momentum of research activities conducted with these sector partners. The successful candidate will not only be responsible for maintaining and contributing to this multifaceted agenda, but will be instrumental in establishing and nurturing academic and research partnerships that will underpin a robust community of practice. 

In order to advance the research agenda, the Academic Research Partnerships Manager will rely on their deep understanding of the academic world and their thorough knowledge of the stakes and drivers that influence researcher activities. They will be skilled in partnership and relationship management and have the capacity to identify and understand partner motivations in order to demonstrate how collaboration will create benefits for all parties. They should be fascinated by research topics relevant to the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors (e.g. trends in donor behavior, philanthropic sentiment, emergent generosity methods and mechanisms) and excited to support investigation into these areas – potentially with opportunities to carry out some of the basic writing and analyses.

Activities:

  • Collaborate across GivingTuesday teams and with current GivingTuesday partners in academia and industry to manage, develop, and refine the research agenda.
  • Manage the GivingTuesday Data Commons Fellowships Program, an initiative aiming to bring data science/analysis resources to industry partners to conduct research that aligns with Data Commons goals
  • Identify new potential academic partnerships and researchers with aligned interests.
  • Engage with participating stakeholders and underwriters to access and leverage a wider range of assets and identify research questions and areas of inquiry that align with the GivingTuesday research agenda.
  • Work closely with current partners to manage projects underway and ensure progress and momentum.
  • Manage the interns that will support organizational work.
  • Seek opportunities to scale projects, including recruiting more researchers and  increasing the value of assets. 
  • Support implementation of research projects by organizing stakeholders, collecting requirements, distilling areas of interest into specific questions, specifying target output and deliverables, building timelines. 
  • Collect feedback from research partners about the utility of collaboration tools and processes to improve collaboration frameworks. 
  • Carry out some basic writing/analysis in collaboration  with leading academics

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Relevant experience in business development, partnerships development, or R&D in a private or public organization. 
  • Post-secondary degree in economics, public policy, applied statistics, sociology, data science or related fields with experience in conducting research and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience in sourcing, researching and analyzing mandates to assess a potential collaborator’s suitability as a research partner
  • Experience in negotiating contracts and agreements 
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including excellent presentation skills and the ability to be an articulate advocate for the organization in research promotion and external relations.
  • Ability to follow technical discussions related to research, and to identify appropriate stakeholders from each sector.
  • Ability to interpret data accurately and integrate report data from various sources
  • Direct experience in an industry liaison role, or with a university, academic office, in a community research context, or similar an asset.
