The Longest Table

The Longest Table is a movement that brings neighbors together for shared meals in open spaces where everyone belongs. In our increasingly disconnected world, we’re rebuilding community one table at a time—fostering human connection, reducing loneliness and reminding us of what we share rather than what divides us.

People of all ages and backgrounds come together to share a meal. Longtime residents, families, new arrivals, visitors, and friends from across the city or around the world all take a seat at the table. The food is as diverse as the participants themselves—homemade dumplings, bake-off cakes, birthday treats, deli spreads, cultural dishes, and comfort foods that carry personal stories and traditions.

It began in 2022 in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, when neighbors closed West 21st Street, set up one long table with hundreds of chairs, and invited everyone to bring friends and food. That simple act of connection sparked something bigger, the desire to turn strangers into friends across New York City, and the nation. This year, The Longest Table was held in 50 cities across the U.S., from big cities to small towns, coast to coast.
