Sarita Devi comes from a historically marginalised community and has a Master’s degree in English. She is a Ward Member of her Gram Panchayat (Village Council) and was elected twice. During her first term, she helped people in her ward make use of various benefits made available through government schemes and now, in her second term, she is focusing on improving nutrition among young girls and women. She has two daughters and was deeply impacted by the fact that the women in her community, which primarily consisted of daily-wage labourers and marginalised farmers, were not aware of the importance of a balanced diet, with many suffering from anaemia. As part of her awareness campaign, she is also distributing iron tablets and promoting kitchen gardens.
