Reimagining Generosity: How Nonprofits in India Can Tap into the Power of GivingTuesday

22 May 2025 by GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday has grown from a simple idea — a day to do good – into a powerful global movement that inspires millions to give. In India, it’s become a powerful moment for nonprofits to rally support, tell their stories, and celebrate the everyday people driving change in their communities. The newly released GivingTuesday India 2024 Report is a testament to the power of generosity, showing how individuals, communities, and organisations across the country came together to celebrate generosity in different ways.

In 2024, more than 7,400 people got involved across a variety of causes, ₹3.7 crore (over USD $450,000) was raised, 500+ volunteers took action, and 800+ items were shared, distributed, or donated. These numbers tell a powerful story: small acts, when multiplied by many, can spark meaningful change. GivingTuesday is more than just a fundraising day — it’s a gateway into a year-round culture of generosity.

As we gear up for GivingTuesday 2025 on December 2, here’s what we learned last year about how nonprofits in India made the most of this day. Whether your goal is to raise funds or resources, build deeper connections, or nurture generous leadership in your community, these key insights will surely help shape your campaign.

Get Creative. Make your Fundraising Innovative, Inclusive, and…Fun!

Nonprofits across India got bold and creative with their GivingTuesday campaigns in 2024. Instead of sticking to the usual donation appeals, they developed exciting, community-driven strategies. From eVidyaloka’s employee-led “Champions for Change” drive, to Ekam Foundation’s cross-sector partnership with a children’s clothing brand, organizations tapped into both internal networks and external collaborators to amplify impact.

Peer-to-peer fundraising also took off, with staff and volunteers stepping up as ambassadors. Some groups focused on building long-term donor relationships, tying their GivingTuesday efforts to bigger organisational goals. The most effective campaigns mixed great storytelling with clear, simple calls to action — making it easy and exciting for people to give. The lesson? When fundraising comes from the heart of the community, generosity spreads faster.

Let Communities Lead: Giving Grows Stronger Together.

On GivingTuesday 2024, nonprofits made space for communities to take the lead – not just as participants, but as the true drivers of change. From Green Hub’s youth-led film screening that sparked conversations on hope and collective action, to Dream a Dream’s sustainability workshops guided by young changemakers, these efforts demonstrated how communities closest to the problems are also closest to the solutions.

Community-led initiatives like Nargis and Tanisha’s, ‘Udarta ke Kisse,’ invited children to craft origami hearts with messages of gratitude, building empathy, trust, and a deeper understanding of everyday generosity. These actions transformed GivingTuesday from a day of giving into a movement for collective leadership. When communities tell their own stories, share their dreams, and take action, generosity doesn’t just grow, it becomes embedded in daily life.

Tell Your Story: It’s the Best Way to Inspire Giving!

Storytelling lies at the heart of GivingTuesday because every act of generosity carries a story worth sharing. In 2024, nonprofits used creative storytelling – through short videos, Instagram Reels, blogs, and local language content – to capture and celebrate the everyday magic of giving across India.

The #BornGenerous Storytellers featured local generosity leaders, while creators shared moving stories of kindness in 12 different regional languages. These stories reached far and wide, showing people that generosity is already part of our daily lives. By mixing social media with offline formats like film screenings, art projects, or events, nonprofits brought out all the colours of giving. Your story — however small — has the power to invite others to reflect, relate, and most importantly, act.

GivingTuesday Is What You Make It

GivingTuesday is a celebration, but more importantly, it’s an invitation. An invitation to shift mindsets from scarcity to abundance, from isolation to community, and from one-time giving to everyday generosity. For nonprofits in India, it’s a powerful reminder that generosity doesn’t begin or end with a donation. It grows through stories, is led by communities, and thrives on creativity and collaboration.
