On #GivingTuesdayCA, the Windsor Residence for Young Men (Windsor, Ontario) and friends are joining on Facebook and Twitter (@WRYM2012) to encourage people far and wide to donate using our profile page at http://givingtuesday.ca/partners/windsor-residence-for-young-men.
Our goal is $10,000 - that's 10 days of effective programming for young men 16-24 years old as they leave homelessness behind to build new lives. WRYM's community funded programming provides a supportive functional family, often the only family “our guys” have ever known, to deliver individual counseling and teach basic life skills. Of an average 54 admissions per year, 37% return to extended family, 43% are established in independent living, 60% stay in school, and 19% find employment.
Recently, one young resident described his experience: "When I had first arrived, I was told that I would have chores to do and I would have to cook a dinner for myself and everyone else one night during the week. In all honesty, I liked the sounds of that seeing as, one, I had no idea of how to cook and, two, I had no responsibility whatsoever before coming to WRYM. The staff here, so far, have done so much for me. They have helped me complete goals such as renewing my health card - as it was expired, finding a job - which I now have, and learning how to be a young and responsible human being - the way an adult is supposed to be."
To add to the #GivingTuesdayCA excitement, anyone who donates $25 or more to WRYM is eligible for a great draw for an evening in a Red Wings Suite at Little Caesars Arena, Detroit. It includes 6 tickets for the NHL hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 and a parking pass. This great prize, worth approximately $1,800 US, has been provided by an anonymous donor who says, “I just want to help out in any small way that I can for a fantastic program!”
