5 years ago, breast cancer stole my eyesight. Six months later, I discovered I was expecting my first child. Adjusting to vision loss while preparing for impending motherhood was extremely difficult, but there was one thing I was absolutely certain about: to raise my family, I wanted to work with a guide dog. 4 years and two beautiful little girls later, Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights, New York, matched me with Frances, a beautiful yellow Labrador Retriever. Affectionately known as “Franny,” this dog has not only become my eyes, but my partner, as I raise my family. Since 1954, Guiding Eyes For the Blind has been serving the blind community. It costs over 50K to breed, raise, train and match an individual with a guide dog! When I learned about #GivingTuesday, I knew I wanted to start a Facebook campaign to support Guiding Eyes for the Blind. My guide dog, Frances, has been one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. Through their work Guiding Eyes has given me the gift of freedom and independence. I’m happy to play a small role in ensuring their mission continues, helping more blind parents experience the joy of guide dogs with #MyGivingStory.
