The Akron Art Museum and Giving Back Tuesday

On #GivingTuesday this year, the Akron Art Museum will renew its commitment to the community we serve by reopening on Tuesdays, expanding access to the museum’s world-class exhibitions of contemporary art and award-winning public programs, and by making it easier than ever before to become a member. For the Akron Art Museum, November 28, 2017 is #GivingBACKTuesday.

For Akron Art Museum, Executive Director John S. Knight and CEO Mark Masuoka, the restoration of Tuesday hours is “an expression of joyous revival.” It has taken ten years of listening and concerted effort to reignite our relationship with our community. The museum is, once again, dedicated to cultivating a deeper relationship with the people around us. Recent exhibitions, programs and successes bear this renewed sense of purpose out. The museum has shared greater access to the artist and the artistic process with truly world-class exhibitions of significant contemporary works. We have taken high quality reproductions of artwork in the museum collection into the neighborhoods and outdoor spaces in and around Akron, Ohio, and soon will be making it possible to put works of art directly on the walls of people’s homes with the Akron Art Library.

The project will allow anyone with an Akron–Summit County Library card to check out an original work of art—to hang in their homes and live with—just as they would a book. The restoration of Tuesday hours is an expression of the growing sense in Akron, Ohio that the community is on the rebound and that the arts are more relevant now then ever. The museum isn’t simply waiting to see if people come visit, but is actively inviting the public in with a special event on the first day of its restored Tuesday hours on November 28, 2017.

As part of #GivingBACKTuesday, the Akron Art Museum will allow anyone to become a new member for a full year for free on November 28. “Renewing our commitment to our community on #GivingTuesday is significant,” Director of Advancement Bryan de Boer said. “Typically organizations use #GivingTuesday to ask people to contribute to worthy causes. However, on this international day of giving, we felt it was more important to give back, and say thank you to the community whose generosity we rely on each and every year.”

The Akron Art Museum’s #GivingBACKTuesday takes place for 24 hours, from 12:00 AM Tuesday, November 28 to 11:59 PM November 28, 2017. Anyone wishing to become a new member of the museum can join with a free individual (Art Enthusiast level) membership. The new memberships will be available in person at the Akron Art Museum during regular hours, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, as well as online at
