We already push three campaigns a year. Was taking part in #GivingTuesday too much to ask?” The debate was on. We weighed in our options, the pros and cons, the wrongs and rights, and then a light dawned on us. There was a specific need we could focus on that was different from all our campaigns combined. This was renovations. We so often completed renovations if an individual funder wanted to help out, or renovations just didn’t happen because our dollars were committed to programming in the poor, remote areas we serve. But our community centers could definitely use an upgrade. We needed a new door for the bathroom, a new roof, new coat of paint, flooring, walls…the list went on. We found that asking for something so needed and so tangible, made #GivingTuesday a true success. Thanks to the Gates Foundation match with Facebook donations on #GivingTuesday, we were able to raise $2,000 in one day. For our small non-profit, with an annual budget that is less than $45,000, raising $2,000 in a day seemed like a dream. However, thanks to the #GivingTuesday idea, that dream became a reality, and our before and after photos definitely show what a difference one day can make.
