Northampton Neighbors is a virtual "Village" that offers support services and programs to older people who want to live independent lives in their own homes, instead of moving to assisted living facilities. Affiliated with the national Village movement (www.vtvnetwork.org), Northampton Neighbors welcomes anyone over 55 who lives in Northampton. Membership is free, and we reach out to all neighborhoods and communities within the city. Our office is located in the Northampton Senior Center, but we are an independent 501(c)(3) and provide very personal volunteer non-medical services to the more frail and needy older people in our community. We try to be good neighbors to each other and offer help such as transportation to a doctor's appointment, shopping, dog walking, gardening, and friendly visiting to those who want it. We also have fun programs and "interest groups," such as hiking, Scrabble, current events discussions, trips to local museums, and picnics (see photo). We are just getting started, but so far more than 250 people have become members, and we look forward to welcoming many more. The national Village movement has over 300 Villages affiliated with it, and we all learn from each other about how to make our villages most effective. But as they say, "If you've seen one Village, you've seen one Village!" Northampton Neighbors is unique to Northampton and reflects the values, diversity, and varying lifestyles of the whole community.
