This year, on #GivingTuesday, we will be fundraising to build a pavilion and play area for the children sponsored through our nonprofit, Tree of Hope Haiti!
Tree of Hope Haiti has a sponsorship program, through which 53 children are sponsored. The sponsored children are from our community in Grand Goâve, Haiti where they currently attend school. This past summer, we hosted our first ever summer camp program for the children! We had 37 children in the program, many of them sponsored through our nonprofit, and some from our community. They spent seven weeks learning Math and English through games, crafts, reading, and other fun activities. The kids loved it, and learned so much!
We would like to share with you the story of one child that has particularly benefitted from the summer camp program, as well as the sponsorship program. He came to Tree of Hope Haiti from the community. He was 12 years old, and not enrolled in school. He had only ever been to school for one year, and had completed Preschool 1. When he entered the summer camp program, he struggled to keep up with the other children his age. So, each day we worked with him on learning to write his name. He loved practicing and was so proud when, by the end of summer camp, he could complete it all on his own! One day, in summer camp, the children were allowed to choose either writing or reading a story. This boy chose instead to sit on the side of the class and write his name over and over again. Also, by the end of summer camp, he had been sponsored to continue his education! He is now so happy to be attending school this year!
Summer camp was an amazing experience for the children last year, and we are already getting ready for next year’s program!
Last summer, we held the program in the downstairs area of our guesthouse. This worked great for last year, however, the sponsorship program continues to grow! Next year, we plan to accept 60 - 70 kids into the summer camp program! So, with the help of our #GivingTuesday campaign, we hope to build an outdoor pavilion for the children to learn and play! The pavilion will be an open area where we will have tables and chairs for the children to use during the program. Eventually, we hope to raise enough funds to build a soccer field/volleyball court, and basketball court!
We are so excited to share this news, and to be part of the #GivingTuesday campaign!
