After the pumpkin pie of Thanksgiving has faded into our waistlines, after we have survived Black Friday’s elbow jabs for Hologram Elmo, and after Cyber Monday’s clicking has calmed, we are greeted by a holiday that has nothing to do with consuming, but giving back. Since 2011, #GivingTuesday has kicked off the holiday giving season, empowering more than 45,000 organizations in over 75 countries to use the day to rally millions of individuals to donate to the causes they care about, as well as perform countless acts of volunteerism, kindness and advocacy. This effort harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, businesses, communities and individuals—to transform how people think about, discuss and participate in the giving season.

At DataKind, we too have seen how the collective power of these groups can make a real impact. Whether it’s using data to predict and prevent home fires, help reduce homelessness in cities, or measuring poverty with satellite imagery, we depend on our global community of volunteer data scientists, social change makers, companies, and foundations to make our work possible.

One way that we’re harnessing this power in 2017 is by co-hosting a DataDive with 92Y and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to analyze data from this year’s #GivingTuesday and extract insights that will lead to even more funding for powerful causes. The findings will be published in a report and shared with #GivingTuesday partners and the greater nonprofit community, empowering organizations to maximize their efforts both on #GivingTuesday and year-round, and enabling 92Y to expand #GivingTuesday’s global impact.

Through our work, we bring dedicated volunteers and social organizations together through the support of our committed funding partners to find solutions for these critical issues.

Companies, help drive our impact!

This #GivingTuesday, we’re calling on corporations to help strengthen and further the Data for Good movement. If you’re a company interested in joining us, here are some ways you can give back:

  • Sponsor a volunteer event, like our upcoming #GivingTuesday DataDive
  • Fund a long-term volunteer project to support a specific cause
  • Donate data for future volunteer projects
  • Support your data science employees to donate their time
  • Help spread the word about the power of pro bono data science

There’s no way we can do what we do without our volunteers. We continue to look for data do-gooders that can help us use data science to move the needle on tough social issues.
