For the very first time since its Charter in '97, Burbank Housing Corporation (BHC) will be joining the #GivingTuesday movement on Nov. 29, 2016. BHC is an affordable housing non-profit developer but BHC provides more than just affordable housing! With 316 units of affordable rentals, 4 after-school and Family Resource Centers and two nationally accredited child care centers under its ownership and management, Burbank Housing Corporation (BHC) has impacted the Burbank community and helped hundreds of lower income families.
BHC’s goal for #GivingTuesday 2016 is to provide a common outdoor space for BHC’s Burbank Bungalows, a service-enriched community that provides permanent supportive housing for 11 formerly homeless veterans. A common outdoor area would provide an open meeting area and allow them to build an even stronger community.
The message behind #GivingTuesday resonates with BHC because the involvement of the Burbank community in our projects is essential to our operation and growth. Last year, BHC and the Burbank community came together and were able to furnish and equip 11 units for homeless veterans through our Adopt-A-Vet's Home program. Knowing that our future tenants would have little to no furniture or home goods, Burbank Housing Corporation created the Adopt-A-Vet’s Home program during the rehab stage of the project to ensure that when our veteran residents moved in, they would be equipped with the basic necessities to start their new life in permanent housing. Over 50 volunteers from all over Burbank came together for our volunteer weekend and committed their time and energy to assembling furniture and making each unit feel like home for our future residents. Donations from local churches, civic associations, business, and generous residents made it all possible. After years of living in cars and the street, 11 formerly homeless veterans have now been living in their new homes for months. This year, BHC hopes to see same generosity during our #GivingTuesday for BHC Veterans Campaign.
