Nonprofit Organizations, Local Governments and Corporate Partners Embrace Collaboration and Innovation to Ignite Global Giving Movement

Regional, Civic and International Participation Growing with New #GivingTuesday Civic Campaigns and Global Initiatives

September 22, New York, NY – From local communities, families and small businesses to international nonprofits and large corporations, people around the world are preparing for the fifth annual #GivingTuesday on November 29th. #GivingTuesday launched as a national campaign in the U.S. in 2012 to inspire giving of all kinds during the holiday season and has since evolved into a global giving movement that unites people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities in a celebration of philanthropy and generosity.

This open-source movement invites participating organizations to make #GivingTuesday their own. The results – more than 40,000 participating organizations in 2015, raising more than $116 million online – highlight the energy, creativity and entrepreneurialism that emerge when people collaborate and share best practices to support causes they believe in and help to spread the word. #GivingTuesday fuels those collaborations and leverages technology to connect people around common goals, whether it’s feeding the hungry, caring for the planet, or finding ways to spread kindness in our daily lives.

The movement continues to grow this year, with new local and regional campaigns – Dallas, Grand Rapids, New York State, New Mexico and more – who join returning civic initiatives like #GivingTuesdayCLT created by SHARE Charlotte, which is bringing together people in the Charlotte, NC area to raise $8 million this year for local nonprofits, and HIPGive’s #LatinosGive, which in 2015, brought together 75 organizations in 10 countries, which raised $230,000 for those serving the Latino community in the Americas.

#GivingTuesday campaigns are also being launched for the first time this year in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Russia, Slovenia and Switzerland. They join the existing national and regional campaigns around the world, as well as independent #GivingTuesday activities, which took place last year in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Tens of thousands of organizations around the world are planning campaigns to be announced in the coming weeks.  Campaigns well underway include City University of New York, the largest urban public university in the country (new to #GivingTuesday), The Family Dinner Project, QVC, SHARE Charlotte and Toys“R”Us. (See below for details.)

“The tremendous response to #GivingTuesday over the last five years has been both humbling and inspiring,” said Asha Curran, chief innovation officer and director of the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at 92Y, the community and cultural center in New York City that created and launched the #GivingTuesday movement. “We have seen countless examples of communities coming together to address challenges. Giving is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity, and the willingness of so many to participate and elevate giving is reason for celebration – even with lots of work still to be done.”

Ranging from “pay it forward” giving chains, to volunteerism at local organizations, to charity drives for funding and resources, people and communities have united around #GivingTuesday to work toward making a positive impact in the lives of others. Simultaneously, #GivingTuesday has sparked innovation in the nonprofit sector, inspiring new ways to engage donors and develop community partnerships. Participants have also harnessed the power of social media by using #GivingTuesday as a platform to share stories and demonstrate the extraordinary impact the movement has on recipients and givers alike.

#GivingTuesday Partners – Models of Giving Leadership

This year, The City University of New York (CUNY), the largest urban public university in the United States, will launch #CUNYTUESDAY - the first ever University-wide giving day. The campaign aims to raise $1 million in 24-hours to support students at the system’s 24 colleges while highlighting the impact of CUNY schools on New York City. Funds raised will go towards student scholarships and emergency funds, among other priorities. This effort will be the culmination of CUNY Month, the annual celebration of the people and programs that enrich every part of New York City. More than half of all undergraduate college students in New York City attend one of CUNY’s 24 senior colleges, community colleges and graduate institutions across all five boroughs.

The Family Dinner Project, which champions family dinner as an opportunity for family members to connect through food, fun and conversation about things that matter, is launching its #giveandtalk campaign in support of #GivingTuesday.
